GROMMET

used instead of foundation loop

1. Fill needle.

2. Make a slip knot about 10 inches from end of thread. Be sure it slips on the loose end tail and not on the thread from the needle.

3. Put cord through loop formed by slip knot.

4. Using mesh stick called for in the instructions you are following, net over both threads of the loop formed by the slip knot.

5. Place the knots on the loop side of the slip knot.

6. Net 1 less loop than instructions call for.

7. Remove the cord from the loop formed by the slip knot.

8. Put the loose end tail through the loop formed by the slip knot.

9. Remove the mesh stick from the loops.

10. Pull the tail, gradually moving knots and reducing the loop formed by the slip knot.

11. When the loop completely disappears, work the knots surrounding the center and keep pulling on the tail until the center is as small as possible. Be careful not to snap the thread by pulling too hard on it.

12. Then tie the tail to the thread on the netting needle with an overhand knot.

13. Using the tail and the thread from the netting needle, tie a CK to form the last loop of round 1.

NOTE

This final overhand knot is called a collecting knot (abbreviated CK). A CK is always tied at the end of each round as the final knot, though the instructions seldom mention it. The CK makes it hard to tell where each round starts and ends (like a chaining 1, 2, or 3 at the beginning of a round does in crocheting).

14. Put a needle threader or a small crochet hook through the center of the grommet from the back to the front.

15. Put threads from anchor through needle threader or catch it with the crochet hook.

16. Pull threads from anchor through center of grommet.

17. Pull loop of anchor through center of grommet so the bead or button fits snugly against the grommet.

18. Put cord through thread loop of anchor on other side of grommet.
