CREATING THE STARTING CHAIN WITH STRING:

In these instructions the word string = whatever string, cord, twine, rope, or thread you are using to net.

If the first row of meshes are tied over a foundation loop and the foundation loop is removed, the loops tied around the foundation loop are slightly bigger than loops in later rows that are tied using the same size mesh stick. Using a starting chain will eliminate this problem.

The instructions in this section assume that you already know how to tie the basic netting knot. If this is not true, please go to either
Basic Knot using Thread or Basic Knot using String/Twine and learn how to tie the Basic Knot (unless you are just browsing).

To make the first loop in the chain:

starting chain step 1

1. Wrap string around the mesh stick twice.

starting chain step 2

2. Tie a knot at top of the mesh stick, leaving about a 3 inch tail.

starting chain step 3

3. Remove mesh stick and stretch loop out.

starting chain step 4

4. Hang loop on nail or hook with knot to the left.

To make the second loop in the chain:

starting chain step 5

5. With knot remaining at left side, tie new knot over mesh stick.

To make all other loops in the chain:

starting chain step 6

6. Remove the mesh stick. Net a knot in the loop just formed.

Repeat that process as often as needed.

starting chain step 7

Since two rows are actually being formed, stretch the meshes out to count them. Make sure the total number of loops completed is double the number of loops called for by the instructions.

The sample has a total of 6 knots and 6 loops, 3 loops on each side.

NOTE: Instead of a nail in the wall, take a board 2 inches wide, 6 inches long, and 1/2 inch thick. Screw an eye screw into the board. Using a "C" clamp attach the board to a table or other surface with the eye screw pointing up. The eye screw can take the place of the nail.
